Not many weeks ago, on a street corner in the village of Pascoag, Rhode Island, a tall, heavily built, and wholesome-looking pedestrian furnished much speculation by a singular lapse of behaviour. He had, it appears, been descending the hill by the road from Chepachet; and encountering the compact section, had turned to his left into the main thoroughfare where several modest business blocks convey a touch of the urban.

After reading "The Call of Cthulhu" I went looking for more of Lovecraft's work. Similarly chilling and spooky, "The Horror at Redhook" is a fairly quick read, but I was glad to have my kindle's built in dictionary. Lots of references to Greek or other myths that you wouldn't know unless you were relatively well-read; it wouldn't detract from the story if you didn't know them, but it definitely adds to the aura of this tale if you do a quick Google search to understand them. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to read Lovecraft for the first time, read something similar to his more popular, "The Call of Cthulhu," or anyone who wants a short and spooky story.

The Horror at Red Hook annotated edition by H P Lovecraft Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

You can buy this for 99¢ or you can buy the COMPLETE COLLECTION OF HP LOVECRAFT, which contains this story, for 99¢. A couple of reviewers complained about bigotry and racism in this story. They obviously don't understand Lovecraft. The people are horrible not because of their race or ethnicity but because of their immersion in evil. In other stories and novels he describes Anglo-Saxon New Englanders immersed in the evil in a similar fashion. Low, loathsome, depraved deformed, etc.
This is one of the most disgustingly racist, bigoted, pieces of literature that I have read all year. The writing is a god-awful catastrophe of "smart" words that are used to veil the grossly offensive discrimination and disrespect that is shown towards people of colour, poverty, and varying religious backgrounds. I sincerely hope the rest of Lovecraft's work isn't this type of ridiculousness because if it is, then I have no idea how someone like him could be so idolized in the literary world. Unacceptable.
I don't really like Lovecraft himself, but I do like Lovecraftian Horror.
His language is archaic. (Some find his language fun and tone setting. I don't. Modern Lovecraftian Horror does just fine in setting a mood without the semi-incomprehensible language that Lovecraft used.)
His racism is hard to overlook.
And sometimes, the way he tells a story is hard to follow, bordering on incoherent.
But, I wanted to read the book "The Ballad of Black Tom"; which expounds upon the story "The Horror at Red Hook."
So far (half-way through), "The Ballad of Black Tom" is excellent. Reading "The Horror at Red Hook" is unfortunately, a must for reading "Black Tom."
Fortunately, "The Horror at Red Hook" is rather short.
In section five there is a note which is a key plot point. This version of the story does not include the note itself. Anyone who pays two bucks for this should get a refund.
I recently found out the HPL lived near me on Clinton St.

I had to read this and am glad I did. It captures the dark element that lurks around Red Hook.
Lovecraft is an acquired taste, but there's nothing like him. Be warned however, he's nowhere near politically correct—even for his time.
